Earlier this month saw national sausage week in the UK and a foray of sausage related innuendos filled my Twitter timeline. My absolute favourite was Grandad’s Sausages with their strapline “bringing a smile to Grandma’s face over 50 years” and let me tell you, I can see why.
Just like Maria in The Sound of Music brown paper packages tied up with string are also one of my favourite things. Especially when adorned with a plump piggy fellow wearing a top hat. What was inside made me smile even more; a selection of the sausages available from Grandad’s Sausages for me to try.
Grandad’s Sausages is a Bury based company now operated by Matthew and Michael who have taken the helm from Grandad Bernard. They have been operating for over 50 years and are keen to keep the smile on Grandma’s faces across Manchester for the long term.
Their sausages are available in ten different flavours:
Traditional British pork.
Lincolnshire.
Pork and Welsh leek.
Pork and Somerset apple.
Pork and crushed garlic.
Olde English.
Cumberland.
Pork and fiery chilli.
Pork and Bury black pudding.
Pork and cranberry.
For me the humble banger is best served with buttery mash and a thick gravy. My absolute favourite of the sausages I tried for this was the pork and apple variety. I thought the apple flavour would be lost but it gave a tart and fruity bite to the sausage. I also really enjoyed the fiery chilli. There was just enough heat to warm my mouth without it being too hot. Not really fiery I guess and hot chilli lovers may be disappointed. Very little came out of these sausages when cooked and they were really juicy. If I were better at sharing I would have gifted the Lincolnshire variety to my Dad who is from that area of the country. Unfortunately for him I’m an only child who doesn’t like to share so that wasn’t going to happen, I ate it instead. I’d have liked a bit more sage but they are were also really good, perhaps I should treat my Dad to a packet of his own.
Grandad’s Sausages are now stocked at Epicerie Ludo but I suggest you call ahead to check they have some in stock. They are flying off the shelves to put a smile on more faces around the North West. Is yours one of them?
