We are halfway through the second lockdown and it is starting to get tiresome. I’ve done the banana bread thing (again), the cocktail zoom meetings and the Sunday roast delivery. I was after something a little different and the Jolly Sailor came to the rescue.
Yes, they have their epic Sunday roast available for takeout, but they are also offering a version during the week as well as slow cooked classics, artisan pizzas and the exceptional pub grub you will be used to if you have dined at the Jolly before. Place your order with at least an hour in advance, and you can collect your meal completely socially distanced ready and waiting for your arrival.
The Almond Group of pubs are working hard to be as sustainable as possible and the majority of their packaging can be composted. I ordered a burger with fries and some chicken goujons, both arrived in these study cardboard containers with only the lids of my sauce pots being plastic. I am so impressed at this attention to detail, especially at a time when restaurants are struggling enough without thinking of these useful initiatives.
Being a regular at the Jolly Sailor, I can attest that both the chicken goujons and burgers are usually very good quality. So, how does that translate when ordering to take out? The chicken goujons tasted exactly the same; soft and juicy chicken coated in a crispy crumb for a satisfying crunch when biting into them. The sweet chilli sauce is a really generous sized pot, to the point that I used the leftovers in a stir fry the next night!
My burger had been wrapped in paper atop the mountain of fresh chunky chips to keep things fresh and prevent the chips getting soggy on the drive home. The burger includes a slice of bacon, cheese and a large slice of tomato so not the sort of thing you would get if you ordered from a generic takeaway. The patty was just cooked through so still moist and the bacon had been cooked crispy, which amazingly it still managed to retain despite the time it takes to get the food home. I have always been a fan of the chunky chips at the Jolly, they are always well seasoned and proper ‘chunky’. These were the same as I remember from dining in and I was so pleased that there is no compromise on the cooking despite being closed for dine in during lockdown.
Next time I’ll be sure to order a slice of the Ginger Sparkle Cheesecake as I sent a friend over a few weeks ago who asked for a Sunday lunch recommendation and I was entirely jealous at the sight of the cheesecake! I was glad I hadn’t on this occasion as I was truly stuffed after my feast. I am seriously out of practice in the eating stakes.
A side note I wanted to mention; whilst the Jolly Sailor is currently closed for dine ins, they also have a cracking coffee trailer outside serving a banging brew from as early as 7.30am. You will find freshly made pastries to accompany your cappuccino and I walk up at least twice a week at the moment to get my caffeine fix.
