Money Supermarket Retail Royalty Challenge: Continuing to Support Retrak Charity Part Two

In my last post I published the diary that we kept during our trip to Ethiopia with Retrak to work with street children. This was an introduction to my Money Supermarket Retail Royalty Challenge as my way of explaining why I raise money for this amazing charity.

Money Supermarket have challenged bloggers to spend £30 on a charity of their choice and to get as much for this £30 as possible. As you will see in my blog from Ethiopia, we had a morning of craft with the boys. They have scrapbooks to decorate and loved all the stationery, pictures and glitter we took with us. These boys have nothing, yet they know who popular footballers such as David Beckham and Wayne Rooney are! They loved cutting out pictures, sticking them in their books and then writing their names around in glitter glue.

The Ethiopia trip is an annual event at Greater Manchester Police and an old friend has been lucky enough to be selected to travel there again this year. Terry has kindly offered to take my £30 worth of goodies out with him and there will be a follow up blog post later in the year to show how the goodies were received. I think I know the answer to this already judging by the following photos which, were taken in 2011 during our craft session.

And here is what I have bought for Terry to take to the boys for the 2013 trip:

craft 2 craft

Lots of pens, coloured and glitter card, glue to stick things onto it with and pencils to colour with. The boys who are lucky enough to attend can also use these for school work. They loved stickers and coloured pipe cleaners so I got loads of these too. They had them all sticking out of their hair as well!

brushes

We realised pretty quickly that we would never have had enough paint brushes. The paint in Ethiopia is a thick oil-based gloss that is a nightmare to get off, especially with no brush cleaner! So I got 2 packets worth of brushes for the renovation work the team will be doing when they get to Ethiopia.

sweets

SWEETIES! The boys went mental for these and I am not surprised considering the lack of money they have. Can you imagine children in this country only getting sweets once every blue moon? These will go down a treat, literally!

Everything was bought from local £1 shops or on ‘buy one get one free’ deals meaning I could get as much for my £30 as possible. I can’t wait to see the photos when Terry returns in November, the bright smiles of the boys enjoying themselves will stay with me forever.
