Let me start by telling you I absolutely love this place. In summer it has the most beautiful large garden at the back to sip on a refreshing cocktail. Come winter they have roaring log fires and mulled wine to leave you rosy cheeked and having to shed layers you are that warm. It is fabulous, when we lived in Disley we actually enjoyed the snow because we would don snow boots and trudge up the road to the Rams Head and cosy up in front of the fire. The place was fully refurbished whilst we lived up there too and we attended the opening party which, was a great night. It is now a stylish and incredibly modern gastro pub with an impressive menu to entice everyone from the party girls pre-Manchester with the ‘fizz Fridays’ to the decked out rambler. No one is turned away and that is one of the reasons why I love it. We had 2 vegetarian friends visit for New Years Eve so popped up just after lunch time for some much needed stomach lining before the evening ahead.
The place was heaving and I was pleasantly surprised that we were shown straight to a table. My favourite soup was on the menu – tomato and basil, so I opted for that and the beef & bacon pie. I asked if the pie contained mushrooms (food of the devil) and the waiter said he didn’t know but there was no option for him to check. When prompted he was happy to go and ask the chef but I was a little taken aback that this wasn’t the first thing he thought of.
Our starters arrived promptly and we all had the soup (£3.95), creatures of habit we are! It was fabulous and I love that it had a punch of chilli to complement the creaminess of the base. The bread was lovely and light too making the meal an ideal starter. Our plates were moved quickly and our glasses replenished.
There was a perfect gap in between the courses and they arrived looking fabulous. We had to request clean cutlery having used them for our starters which, was a slight annoyance but not a massive issue.
The vegetarian courses were completely different on this scale. There are no photos but the crispy potato, squash, olive and truffle cake (£10.95) was a huge portion, it completely overfaced our friend who managed about a quarter of it with the sides as well. The goats cheese, chilli & courgette skewers (£9.95), on the other hand went down very well with them both so a big thumbs up there.
My beef & bacon pie (£10.95) was fabulous served with orange and cardamom infused carrots that were beautifully sweet setting off the saltiness of the bacon so well. If I was being incredibly picky I would say I wanted more of the fabulously crisp puff pastry as there was a hole in the top to hold my vegetables… not needed in my opinion and I would have rathered the whole be filled with more pastry but I’m sure my waist line was thankful.
We were too full for dessert but it goes without saying that we will be back soon, the service was a little lacking but it was very busy and the small things were insignificant in the grand scheme of things.
Many people compare the Rams Head to the Red Lion which I reviewed earlier in the week (the link can be found HERE if you missed it) and, on this occasion, I have to say the Red Lion wins the race. The service was impeccable in comparison, that said, it was a lot quieter. It’s a shame that I’ll have to visit both again to be 100% sure… let the fight commence 😉
This meal was paid for.
