Sometimes you can’t beat a good piece of cake. At the same time, sometimes, you want that in the comfort of your own home rather than having to get dressed (ahem) and go out to find it. That is where supermarkets can be a god send. You know when you are feeling a bit low or under the weather and you just want something sweet in a hurry? That is where Coppenrath and Wiese come in…
Coppenrath and Wiese create frozen desserts using no artificial colourings or flavourings to try and replicate that ‘home made’ flavour. They pride themselves on using the best possible ingredients and packaging to make sure, when you come to enjoy your dessert, it still looks the way it would have done had you opened up the packaging and munched it in the shop. Not that you would with them being frozen, if they were fresh that would be an entirely different story and I have been known to wander around a supermarket munching a pastry on many occasion.
The range is extensive with cakes, gateaux, cheesecakes, tortes, strudels and pavlovas to name but a few. I really like the look of the new stracciatella kirsch torte. It takes the best of the dessert world by combining chocolate and fruit! Cherry infused stracciatella cream on top of chocolate sponge with a biscuit base sounds amazing for a quiet Friday in with the girls or something you can have in your freezer should a group of people call round unexpectedly!
Coppenrath and Wiese were kind enough to send me some of their cheesecakes to try. Being the nice person I am, I brought one into work to share with my team. That and plying them with cake means they are less likely to moan at me for a few hours, every cloud…
The packaging is indeed sturdy, so sturdy that I struggled to get the cheesecake out in one piece! Lots of snipping with scissors and gentle coaxing later, it was free. The base is nice and crisp with a buttery flavour that is just what I expect from a decent cheesecake. At first glance the topping looks quite jelly like in consistency but it isn’t. I much prefer this as the sauce spreads over the cheesecake better meaning I don’t get a mouthful of tangy fruit. It is a little over sweet though, I’d have preferred more of a tang.
The cheesecake itself is light and fluffy, not dense and heavy like they can be when bought from the supermarket. Once again, the flavour was slightly too sweet and I wanted more ‘cheese’ flavour. I am a fan of my cheesecakes having a good kick of the soft cheese they are made with. Coppenrath and Weise make their soft cheese with 4kg of milk per 1kg of soft cheese to give a firmer and grainier cheese than normal. I just wanted more of the soft cheese taste.
Overall they are tasty and perfect if you don’t have the time to make your own. The range is stocked in most big supermarkets including Waitrose. Next time you’re there pick one up for those moments when you want to sit in front of the TV with your pyjamas on all day… you won’t regret it.
