Being on a health kick means I am trying to concentrate on eating as healthily as possible when I’m not eating out. This has come in many forms in the past and I’ve tried many low fat, low calorie diets with some success. Most of them end up making me feel hungry so I am keen to find a balance that means I can still lose weight but stay healthy and keep motivated at the same time. One of the things I have found I need to keep in my diet is a decent oil. Healthy fats are essential to a healthy diet and I’ve been looking for a decent olive oil for quite some time. I think I have found one…
Candias Oil supply olive oil from the Greek island of Crete. Now let me tell you I adore Crete. I went there on a girlie holiday a while back and I loved the place. The weather, the history, the booze… it’s an amazing little island.
I was quite impressed with this scenic shot of the nation’s flag. We stayed in a tiny family run hotel and they grew their own vegetables in a plot next to the hotel.
Doesn’t it look lush and green? The climate really helps produce to grow. It’s the weather that means they can create such amazing products as olive oil.
I got to try the PDO Viannos variety which comes from one of the 9 PDO regions of Crete. This means the region has been certified for the quality of this unique product thanks to the climate and the quality of the soil. Viannos is exceptionally fertile, as the streams and rivers that cross the mountainous and semi-mountainous zone end here, enriching the soil with their deposits and irrigating the land. This, in turn, produces a wonderfully golden coloured oil.
Look how golden it is! The flavour is also unique with a wonderfully fruity flavour and slight peppery finish. PDO Viannos olive oil is perfect served simply with chunks of warm crusty bread. The flavour is also strong enough to stand up to other flavours you put with it and I made a particularly impressive salad dressing with a sprinkle of salt and a dash of red wine vinegar. It was lovely drizzled over a rocket salad and added to the pepperiness of the leaves. The stonking flavour means, being on a healthy eating plan, I am not missing out on big flavours. The beauty of such a good quality product is I want more of it meaning my hair and skin are benefiting from the healthy oils I am putting into my body. That’s going to save me a fortune on skin and hair care products!
