2016 is the year of the taco and Wahaca are celebrating the only way they know how, specials of course! I popped down to give their spring specials a try.
You can still choose from the regular menu and I can highly recommend the guacamole and chicharron here. I’m not a fan of guacamole as a rule but the version here is garlicky with a good kick of lemon whilst the chicharron are air filled and crunchy but not so much that you feel like they will break your teeth.
The Crispy Prawn Tacos are lovely and fresh spiked with chilli for a little heat. The corn tortillas have been fried when stuffed with light and plump prawns before being topped with chipotle and fresh salsa. I really enjoyed these and despite being deep fried, they are surprisingly light.
The Slow Cooked Lamb Tacos are completely different with a generous pile of lamb shoulder marinated in chilli and orange before being slow cooked with sweet onions until soft. The filling is much heavier than the prawn and the regular tortilla add to this making them a much more filling dish. The orange gives a bit of citrus that makes these that bit different for a Mexican restaurant.
It would be rude to stop there so we tried some of the Pork Pibil Tacos. The Yucatecan marinade is lightly spiced and makes the meat wonderfully juicy where it could so easily have dried out.
I was talked into trying the Sweet Potato Chunks although I am not the biggest fan of sweet potato as a rule. I know they are healthier than regular potatoes but no matter how hard I try I just can’t get on with them. That said these were really good with a lightly crunchy skin and soft flesh on the inner. They were generously seasoned with rock salt which really helped me to sit and devour the pot despite claiming to be full.
As always our Wahaca experience was a pleasant one and I’m hoping to go back for those prawn tacos, they were delicious! Get your hands on their spring specials before 8th April.
We were invited to dine as guests of Wahaca and weren’t asked to pay for our food.
