I’m a huge Sex and the City fan. It encompasses two of my passions in life; New York and shoes. I’ve bored you all with my love of shoes before (it’s HERE) and I’m pretty sure I’ll be boring you lots over the next few months with tales of America. I won’t be going to New York on my next trip but then I have been so many times before, it is time for something new. My obsession with Sex and the City saw me on the tour the last time I was in New York. I got to eat cupcakes at Magnolia Bakery (but seriously, if you are going to go, have the banana cream pudding) and drink cosmopolitans in Scout. I wasn’t much of a cocktail drinker at the time and a cosmo soon became my cocktail of choice. I’ve gone off them since I have been introduced to some more delicious delights but was excited when Cheeky Monkey Cream Chargers asked if I fancied trying their new molecular kits.
The kits are designed for novice bartenders who are interested in the world of molecular mixology. I’m talking fruit pearls, foams and caviar. In other words, making your cocktails edible! This all sounded far too technical for me and I didn’t have a lot of the ingredients the instructions said I would need so I took my kit into my lovely friends at Tusk to play with. They do love a challenge after all.
Inside the kit you will find sachets of the ingredients (naturally forming additives) needed to make the different elements as well as the equipment you will need including a slotted spoon, pipettes and a silicone mould. There are also a few different cosmopolitan recipes for you to try with your molecular creations.
My test team said the kit was really easy to use and that the instruction booklet gave them a step by step guide with images to make things that little bit easier. The picture above shows the foam (cranberry mousse) that makes the cosmopolitan incredibly sweet. This kind of killed it for me as I like my cosmo to be tart and slightly sour.
You can just about see the pearls at the bottom of the glass here which gave a nice surprise once the cocktail was finished. My test team also tried making caviar with balsamic vinegar that worked really well. After making 3 cocktails there is still lots of ingredients left so, now I’ve seen how easy it is, I’ll be sorting some ingredients and trying it for myself. Keep an eye on my Twitter over the coming weeks to see how I get on.
The kits are available at £29.99 from Cheeky Monkey Cream Chargers where you will also find a mojito and margarita version. I’d be interested to see how the lime foam works on the margarita!
This kit was sent to me for review purposes. This is an honest and unbiased review.
